Also known as ‘conscious sedation’ and ‘laughing gas’, happy gas helps to ease dental fear and anxiety (yay!). Happy gas sedation provides a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Nitrous oxide is a colourless, odourless gas that’s been used in dentistry for decades. It’s still a popular choice due to its safety, effectiveness, and speedy recovery time.
It’s really simple. You breathe in nitrous oxide (happy gas) through a mask that’s gently placed over your nose. The effects of nitrous oxide are quick, so you’ll feel calm and relaxed within minutes. Some people feel a little heavy. Some people have slightly tingly fingers. It can feel different for everyone, but you’re sure to feel relaxed. (Yes, you might even laugh a little!)
Most people remain awake with happy gas, but in a dream-like state without pain or anxiety. You’ll be monitored throughout the sedation process to ensure your safety and comfort.

In most cases, yes—you can drive home after treatment. Happy gas is a mild anaesthetic, so people tend to feel like their usual self within just a few minutes.
Happy gas side effects are minimal and, typically, rare. Once your treatment has finished, you’ll be given oxygen to help flush out the remaining nitrous oxide. This helps you to return to your normal state and reduces any side effects. Occasionally, people may experience:

Happy gas is a safe sedation method for most people, including children. Yet, it may not be the right option in certain instances. For example, if you have breathing problems or a blocked nose nitrous oxide may not be suitable. Also, it may not be suitable for very young children, as they can have trouble keeping the mask on.
